The Jack Black and Paul Rudd starrer creature comedy, Anaconda has grossed more than 100 million from theatres worldwide, according to a Variety report. The film has earned $50.4 million in the USA and $51.2 million from theatres elsewhere as of January 09, Friday. The Tom Gormican directorial follows two friends (Rudd and Black) who go to the Amazon jungle to make a documentary based on the gigantic reptile, only for the real creature to show up and throw a spanner in the works. Their comic caper plan turns into a potentially deadly scenario as the reptile starts to disturb them.
Recently, director Gormican revealed that he and his creative team wanted to make an entertainer with a lot more comedy instead of a mere reboot of the 1997 original. Co-writer Kevin Etten said, "The more we thought about it, we realised there was an opportunity to have fun with it. We saw the potential to create big laughs and comedic moments, and at the same time, scare the audience and ground the characters, so you’re rooting for them to succeed."
Known for directing films such as The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and penning Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Gormican wrote the film alongside Kevin Etten. Steve Zahn, Daniela Melchior, Selton Mello, and Thandiwe Newton are also part of the film's cast.
Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have produced the movie through their banner Fully Formed Entertainment, alongside Gormican and Etten, for distributor Sony Pictures Releasing. The film hit theatres on Christmas Day last year through Sony Pictures Entertainment India, also with dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Not all reviewers appreciated the film fully upon its release. However, the eventual box office triumph of the film proves the wider appeal of the cinematic genre elements involved in it.
