Zootopia 2 claimed the distinction of being the highest-grossing film in the history of Walt Disney Animation Studios this week, having amassed a staggering $1.46 billion at the global box office. The film narrowly edged out Frozen 2 (2019), which concluded its theatrical run with $1.45 billion.
Now in its fifth week of release, the film leveraged a massive Christmas holiday surge to add $87.9 million to its total. To date, the film has earned $333 million in the USA and $1.13 billion elsewhere. The movie’s path to the top has been a swift sprint rather than a marathon. It crossed the $1 billion mark in just 17 days, setting a new speed record for a PG-rated feature.
Perhaps the most significant chapter of this success story is the film’s performance in China—a market where Western releases have struggled recently. It has surged beyond $500 million in Chinese theaters alone, the highest figure for an American film by far. For comparison, Disney’s other major December release, James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, is currently trailing at nearly $100 million in the region.
Zootopia 2 joins an exclusive group of 2025 blockbusters. Only two other films have crossed the billion-dollar threshold in 2025: Ne Zha 2 (China), the highest-grossing animation film of all time with a collection of over $2.2 billion, and the live-action remake of Disney’s own Lilo and Stitch, which sits at $1.03 billion.
The sequel brings Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman back together as the voices of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde. It channels the rabbit and fox’s buddy-cop dynamic towards a reptilian mystery, which threatens the stability of the mammal metropolis.
Given the film's continued momentum, analysts expect it to widen its lead over Frozen 2 in the coming weeks.
