Blumhouse and Atomic Monster studios are developing a movie adaptation of Hannah Rose May's comic book series The Exorcism at 1600 Penn.

Set within the most iconic address in the United States - The White House, the supernatural thriller transforms the location into a sinister arena where forces of good and evil collide. At the centre of the story is the nation’s first female president, navigating escalating global tensions, the looming spectre of World War III, the pressures of raising two teenage children, and an ever-evolving media environment.

The comic series features artwork by Vanesa Del Rey and has expanded with a sequel titled The Exorcism at Buckingham Palace, which is set to be released. Jason Blum is producing the film adaptation for Blumhouse, with Ryan Turek serving as executive producer alongside series co-creator May and IDW Publishing CEO Davidi Jonas.

Explaining why they chose to make the book into a film, Blumhouse’s EVP Feature Development Turek, said, "What immediately drew us to The Exorcism at 1600 Penn was how grounded and urgent it feels. Hannah has created a story that fuses classic possession horror with contemporary political tension in a way that feels bold and deeply human. It is exactly the kind of material we look for when we think about expanding horror into new spaces, and we are excited to identify a filmmaker who can bring this world to the screen with the scale and perspective it deserves."

Sharing her excitement, May said, "Getting to work with Blumhouse to bring The Exorcism at 1600 Penn to the big screen feels like a dream come true. Blumhouse has defined modern horror for a generation, and I could not be more excited to be working with them on this adaption. I am so grateful to my incredible partners at IDW for their tireless work to share this story with audiences around the world."

May is also known for creating Rogues’ Gallery for Image Comics and The Guy in the Chair for Dark Horse. She is currently working on a prequel to Smile for IDW, in collaboration with director Parker Finn and Paramount, which is slated for publication in mid-February. In addition to her work as a writer, May is an actor, with screen appearances in HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm and CBS’s Ghosts.
