The Fast & Furious franchise is finally heading towards its last lap. The long-running action series, which has become one of Hollywood's biggest franchises over the years, is gearing up for its 11th and final mainline instalment, Fast Forever. The film is currently scheduled to reach theatres on March 17, 2028.

Vin Diesel, who has been the face of the franchise as Dominic Toretto, has now revealed when cameras are expected to roll. Speaking to Variety at the 25th anniversary screening of The Fast and the Furious on Monday, the actor said production is currently planned to begin in December. “We start shooting in December, if I can make good on the request from the studio,” Diesel said, adding that he is confident about where the project currently stands.

The actor also opened up about the long journey behind the script, revealing that it took four years and four different teams of writers before he felt the story was worthy of bringing the saga to an end. Diesel said the latest draft affected him so deeply that he broke down while reading it.

“I’m in a good place, though. I had to go through four sets of writers, four years of development, to get to something that I felt would be worthy of a finale. And when I read the script a couple of weeks ago, [I cried],” he told Variety.

During the anniversary screening, Diesel elaborated on his emotional reaction to the script, saying he initially shed a single tear before eventually being unable to hold back his emotions. He recalled his sister jokingly telling him, “No more crying, bro.” Diesel also shared a message with fans gathered at the screening: “Sometimes, even the toughest guys in the world need to cry.”

Fast Forever will serve as the conclusion to the main Fast & Furious storyline. However, director Louis Leterrier has admitted that he has not yet read the current script. Speaking to Polygon, Leterrier teased that the franchise will receive an ending while keeping details under wraps. The Fast & Furious series remains Universal's longest-running and most profitable franchise, having collectively earned around $7.3 billion worldwide.
