New members have been added to Taika Watiti's Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory to make the film sweeter. Bridgerton stars Nicola Coughlan, and Charithra Chandran, along with Samson Kayo (F1: The Movie), Christopher Chung (Slow Horses), Kate Winslet (Mare of Easttown) and Helena Bonham Carter (Enola Holmes) are now part of the new movie from Netflix Animation Studios.
They join previously announced cast members Kit Kit Connor, Charlie Paley and Taika Waititi who plays the titular Willy Wonka. It continues the universe that started with Roald Dahl's 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
According to the makers, in Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory, "Wonka (Waititi) has spent the years since the infamous Golden Ticket contest behind bars — and not the chocolate kind — for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry. Having served his time, he returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world.
But one thing stands in his way: Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends. Facing eviction, this next generation of so-called 'rotten' kids hatch a plan to break into the factory, steal a priceless Wonka Bar, and save their homes. Like the children who came before them, however, they soon discover that the fantastical world inside the factory may be more than they can chew..."
The upcoming film is directed by Jared Stern of The LEGO Batman Movie-fame and Elaine Bogan (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia). Before its Netflix release on December 22, 2027, Charlie vs the Chocolate Factory will have a 47-day theatrical release which begins on November 5. A similar arrangement, as reported earlier, has been done for Greta Gerwig's adaptation of Narnia: The Magician's Nephew.
Aron Warner and Timothy Yoo are the producers for Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, which sees Sony Pictures Entertainment handle international theatrical distribution. Waititi serves as the executive producer.
Willy Wonka has been adapted into several major films, stage musicals, and crossover specials. Major film adaptations include Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) from Gene Wilder, directed by Mel Stuart; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) from director Tim Burton and actor Johnny Depp; and Wonka (2023) headlined by Timothee Chalamet and made by filmmaker Paul King. The most recent one was a prequel to the 1971 film.
