Actor Jim Carrey has been confirmed to play a lead role in an upcoming film based on the animated sitcom The Jetsons. Warner Bros Discovery revealed the news in its quarterly letter to shareholders. The confirmation comes around 10 months after Variety reported about Carrey being in negotiations for the role in the upcoming film, with screenwriter Joe Epstein and Jurassic World filmmaker Colin Trevorrow being attached to it. The letter also revealed that Warner Bros Discovery aims to release the film outside of 2027.
Running from 1962 to 1987, The Jetsons revolves around a nuclear family who exists in the Space Age. It is similar to the show The Flintstones. The characters in the sitcom also feature in video games, comic books, television films, and so forth, in additional to the theatrically released Jetsons: The Movie that stars Mel Blanc and George O’Hanlon in voice roles.
Recently, Jim Carrey played Dr Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, reprising his role from the first two instalments. He is set to comeback as Dr Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is now in post production.
Carrey has also been confirmed to play the titular role in a second part to the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Ron Howard of How the Grinch Stole Christmas is set to comeback for the sequel, starring Carrey in the iconic role created by Dr Seuss. The upcoming film is set to be produced by Howard along with Brian Grazer under their Imagine Entertainment banner. Imagine Entertainment and Howard made the confirmation through social media in June, with a photograph featuring the actor dressed up as the Grinch. They wrote in the caption, referring to Carrey's character, "He’s a mean one… A sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas is in development."
