One of the biggest talking points from Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been its closing moments, where Peter Parker (Tom Holland) and Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) share their iconic handshake as Ned says "Peter" with recollection before the screen cuts to black.
The scene has sparked countless fan theories, with viewers debating whether it hints at Ned recovering his memories, a deeper emotional connection, or sets up the next chapter in Peter's journey. Addressing the speculation, director Destin Daniel Cretton said the ending was never meant to frustrate audiences with an intentionally vague conclusion.
"Listen, we're definitely not trying to torture people with ambiguity. I feel like what's very clear is the emotion you're left with when we cut to black. To me, there's a very clear feeling of joy—just enough—and then you cut to black, Cretton told Deadline.
While acknowledging the flood of theories online, Cretton said he has no intention of confirming or denying any of them. "I have seen the theories, and I love the theories. I think they're so cool, and I don't want to stop that conversation by putting my opinion in the middle of it."
The filmmaker also suggested that the discussions surrounding the ending could influence the future of the franchise as development continues on the next Spider-Man film."Knowing there will be another movie, that conversation will continue in the writers' room as we figure out—if we figure out—what we're going to do next."
Cretton said fan engagement has become an integral part of the creative process, with the team closely following audience reactions and conversations. "That's what's so cool about these movies. The fans are so engaged. Everybody on our side is listening to everything. Those are conversations we've had in the writers' room as well, and I think it's fun that everybody is participating, not just in analysing this movie, but potentially in creating whatever happens in the next one."
