Anne Hathaway's The Princess Diaries, directed by Gary Marshall became an instant hit back when it released in 2001. It paved way to a sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004. After two decades of fans’ hopeful whispers on a third part are reaching a breaking point as talks of the threequel is finally move forward. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the Interstellar star revealed that she is actively working towards bringing The Princess Diaries 3 on the big screen. “One Hundred Percent, we are constantly working on it”, the actor said.
Hathaway explained why she couldn't focus on the third part of The Princess Diaries. She said that the space was unexpectedly taken over by The Devil Wears Prada 2. While she was busy working on the sequel in 2025, she opened up about the workload, saying, “It became impossible to focus on both at the same time.” The actor confirmed that her focus is on making The Princess Diaries 3 as her next project. While Hathaway is aware that fans are eager for the sequel to The Princess Diaries 2, she revealed that the third movie has not been officially approved yet. Sharing an update on the story, she said that she is currently "chipping away at the script", while working with her collaborators.
She wrapped up by saying, “If I learned anything from The Devil Wears Prada 2, it's that expectations are very high, and if you are going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park."
The Princess Diaries starred Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a high school student who discovers she is the heir to the fictional kingdom of Genovia. The film was a major success at the box office, collecting over $165 million worldwide.
Speaking about The Devil Wears Prada 2, the actor hoped that audiences would enjoy reuniting to watch the continued story of the beloved characters. She said, “What I hope, and I think it’s a fair hope, is that this is a global event at a time when we feel very, very fractured.” Following her much-awaited return in The Devil Wears Prada sequel, Hathaway is also set to star in The Odyssey from director Christopher Nolan.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is all set for its theatrical release on May 1.
