Born in Normandy in 1948 to painters, Baye’s path to the screen was full of struggle. She grappled with dyslexia before leaving school at the age of 14 to pursue dance in Monaco. However, her trajectory shifted in the 1970s when she starred in the works of independent filmmakers such as François Truffaut, Claude Sautet, Maurice Pialat, and Jean-Luc Godard. In recent years, she played complex characters in Canadian director Xavier Dolan's films Laurence Anyways and It’s Only the End of the World.

Baye is also known for her marital relationship with Johnny Hallyday, the singer also known as the 'French Elvis'. Laura Smet, Baye and Hallyday's daughter, followed in her mother’s footsteps. Smet and Baye most recently starred as fictionalised, bickering versions of themselves in the series Dix pour cent (Call My Agent!).
