Netflix’s Emily in Paris is gearing up for its return on December 18, and star Lucien Laviscount promises fans they’re in for a ride unlike any before.

“All I’m gonna say is strap in,” Laviscount told People. “Because it goes left, so far left, and a little bit right this season. I didn’t know what to expect — none of us do before we get the scripts — and we got the scripts for this season, and it’s … Yeah, I don’t think anyone could have foreseen that coming.”

Season 5 wrapped production in late August after filming across Paris, Rome, and Venice. While the show won’t officially transform into Emily in Rome, the storyline picks up after Season 4’s finale, which teased Emily (Lily Collins) heading to Italy to run Agence Grateau’s satellite office. As fans recall, the season closed with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) whisking Emily away on his Vespa, while Alfie (Laviscount) encouraged Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) to fight for her love.

Speaking about the shoot, Laviscount shared, “It’s good to be back—to be back in Paris. We shot quite a little bit in Rome as well. It was amazing.”

The upcoming season will see the return of familiar faces, including Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie, Thalia Besson, Paul Forman, and Arnaud Binard. Joining them are newcomers Bryan Greenberg (Suits LA) as Jake, an American living in Paris; Michèle Laroque (Better Days) as Yvette, an old friend of Sylvie’s; and Minnie Driver, who appears as Princess Jane.

One familiar character, however, won’t be back. Camille Razat, who played Gabriel’s girlfriend since Season 1, exited the series after her character faked a pregnancy and ultimately chose to leave Paris.

According to Netflix’s official logline, Season 5 will follow Emily adjusting to her new life in Rome as she balances professional ambitions and personal entanglements. “But just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships. Tackling conflict with honesty, Emily emerges with deeper connections, renewed clarity, and a readiness to embrace new possibilities,” the streamer teased.
