Actor Julia Roberts has confirmed that she is in negotiations to star in the sequel of the much-popular 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend's Wedding. She revealed the news to Variety while talking about her work in Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt.

It was in July that it was reported that a sequel to My Best Friend's Wedding was in early development, penned by Celine Song of Past Lives and Materialists-fame. This news came after actor Dermot Mulroney, who played the lead in the original film, teased about "talks of a sequel".

My Best Friend's Wedding, directed by PJ Hogan and scripted by Ronald Bass, revolved around Julianne Potter, a food critic played by Roberts who discovers that her longtime friend Michael O’Neal (played by Mulroney), with whom she once made a vow to marry if they were still single at 28, is getting married. The film, which is regarded as one of the best romantic comedy films of the 1990s and of all time, also stars Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett.

It was critically acclaimed and a box office hit which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score in addition to 3 Golden Globe Award nominations.

After the Hunt also stars Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, Chloe Sevigny, and Michael Stuhlbarg and is scheduled to hit theatres on October 10.

The story of the psychological thriller, follows a college professor (Julia Roberts), who finds herself stuck in a dilemma, when one of her students accuses her colleague of crossing a line. Dark secrets and clashes take place as the accusation escalates beyond emotional boundaries.
