Wuthering Heights, the upcoming period romance starring Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie, had garnered attention ever since its announcement back in July 2024. On Wednesday, the first teaser of the film was officially unveiled.
By the looks of it, Wuthering Heights promises to be a subversive adaptation of the classic romance novel by Emily Bronte that has been the subject of many notable Hollywood adaptations earlier. Director Emerald Fennell, known for films like Saltburn and Promising Young Woman, promises to focus more on the steamy sensuality and the sexual tension between its protagonists, as evident in the teaser which also draws attention with its use of anachronistic score (by Charli XCX). Fennell has also penned the screenplay for her film. Elordi will be seen playing Heathcliff while Robbie plays Catherine Earnshaw. Wuthering Heights also features Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes and Ewan Mitchell.
Margot Robbie, is also co-producing the film under the banner LuckyChap, in collaboration with Josey McNamara and Emerald Fennell. The Barbie actor marks her third collaboration with Fennell after Saltburn and Promising Young Woman. Backed by MRC Studio, and planned to be distributed by Warner Bros Moion Pictures, Wuthering Heights will hit theatres internationally on February 11, and on February 13 in USA.
The Fennell directorial sparked many conversations on social media back when the makers announced in September 2024 their decision of casting Elordi, a white actor, to play Heathcliff who is described as a ‘dark-skinned gipsy’ in the book, which was integral to the complex colonial dynamics of the main characters in the novel. Emily Bronte’s novel followed two families — the Earnshaws and the Lintons — and the volatile relationship they share with Heathcliff, who is Earnshaws’ foster son.
