With a new American Psycho film from Lionsgate in the making by Luca Guadagnino, it was recently speculated that a female version of Patrick Bateman would feature as the lead with rumours circling around Margot Robbie's casting.

However, it has been confirmed that the makers are still looking for a lead for the new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' book.

Ellis' book was adapted by Mary Harron in the 2000 film of the same name, starring Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe and Jared Leto.

The film follows Patrick Bateman (played by Christian Bale), a wealthy Manhattan investment banker who hides his psychopathic violence and murderous impulses behind a facade of charm and material success. As his obsession with status and control deepens, his grip on reality unravels, exposing the emptiness and brutality of 1980s consumer culture.

The latest adaptation, features a script by award-winning screenwriter Scott Z Burns, known for The Laundromat and will be produced by Frenesy Films and executive produced by Sam Pressman, the son of the original film's producer, Edward R Pressman. Earlier, Austin Butler and Jacob Elordi's names were also in discussion. However, there were no confirmations on the same, and the search for Patrick Bateman continues.

While details about the screenplay has still been kept under wraps, it has been reported that Guadagnino will take the erotic route for the adaptation of the novel. Other members of the cast and crew are yet to be announced.

Guadagnino, known for I Am Love, Suspiria and the Academy Award-winning Call Me By Your Name, recently made Julia Roberts-starrer After the Hunt.
