How to Train Your Dragon Movie Review: A rip-roaring adventure that recaptures the charm of the original

The film series, based on a book series by Cressida Cowell, revolves around the adventures of an eccentric teenage Viking, Hiccup, who stumbles across an injured dragon one day in the mythical Viking village of Berk. Hiccup names the dragon Toothless, and the pair forms an unbreakable and iconic bond throughout the series.

Upon release in June this year, the film was met with positive reviews and was commercially successful, minting over $635.7 million worldwide. It is the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the highest-grossing film of the franchise. Our CE review of the film called it a "comfort food cinema". "This explains why a viewing of How to Train Your Dragon, a live-action remake of the animation film of the same name, does not become an exercise in franchise fatigue. Despite following 2010’s How to Train Your Dragon very closely, the film does not feel like a mere rehash of the original," wrote Sreejith Mullappilly.
