Director Ryan Coogler's allegorical vampire film Sinners, starring Michael B Jordan in a dual role and Hailee Steinfeld, among others, has been generating plenty of Oscar buzz ahead of the marquee awards ceremony next year. Meanwhile, the film has earned plaudits from some of the best minds in Hollywood. The latest to express his appreciation for the film is The Godfather and Apocalypse Now director Francis Ford Coppola. The legendary filmmaker took to Instagram, shared stills from the film and wrote, "Something this enormous, this personal, this epic and this outrageous cannot be ignored." The filmmaker added that he judges a film also based on the factor of whether it transports or invites him to an experience or life that he "could never know any other way". Describing Sinners as just that kind of film, he said that it is "a historical epic, a horror film, a blues music extravaganza; an undiluted honest African-American perspective, the ultimate true vampire story (slavery) with an uncovering of years of thinking about cinema all in one gargantuan artistic composition."
Coppola also praised Coogler, taking note of the latter's singular vision and talent. "To SEE this work is to be immersed in so many levels of so many things, through the eyes and soul of such a natural-born talent that it defies description or definition: a talent that just IS and will only continue to evolve through the coming years," the filmmaker wrote.
Sinners tells the story of twin brothers (Jordan in a double role) who go back to their native in Mississippi Delta to open a juke joint. The endeavour starts on a positive note, with people from their community flocking to the venue and celebrating with alcohol and music. However, it soon turns into a nightmare when a group of white supremacist vampires attack everyone in the juke joint.
