Though her character Cici Cooper met a grisly end in Scream 2, Sarah Michelle Gellar hasn’t given up on the idea of returning to the slasher franchise. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star recently revealed that she actively campaigned for a part in the upcoming Scream 7, but so far, no dice.

“I’m not in Scream 7,” Gellar said in an interview with ET. “I tried to get in Scream 7; nobody wanted me. They were bringing everybody back. I kept thinking I would get a call—I didn’t get a call.”

Gellar was quick to point out that death doesn’t necessarily mean finality in the Scream universe. “There are a lot of people that died in all the Scream movies that are back. Skeet [Ulrich], [Matthew] Lillard. I’m just saying I’m waiting for my call,” she teased.

Set to be directed by franchise creator Kevin Williamson, Scream 7 is bringing back a mix of legacy characters, including David Arquette and Scott Foley, fuelling speculation about who else might make a surprise return.

Gellar originally appeared in 1997’s Scream 2 as Cici, a college student who meets her fate after being stalked and attacked by Ghostface in her sorority house. The same year, she starred as Helen Shivers in I Know What You Did Last Summer, another fan-favourite horror role.

While I Know What You Did Last Summer is also getting a sequel, Gellar has made it clear that Helen won’t be rising from the grave. “I am dead,” she told People in 2023. Still, she's playing a behind-the-scenes role in the new film, directed by her close friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
