Andrew Garfield in talks to lead Paul Greengrass’ The Rage

Andrew Garfield is in advanced talks to lead The Rage, Paul Greengrass’ historical drama set during England’s 1381 Peasants’ Revolt.

Originally set to star Matthew McConaughey, the film will now likely see Garfield take on the role of a farmer who becomes the unlikely leader of the rebellion, possibly inspired by historical figure Wat Tyler, though exact details remain under wraps.

The Rage dramatises the violent uprising that erupted in mediaeval England due to oppressive taxes and deep socioeconomic inequalities. The story is expected to blend visceral action with Greengrass' trademark tension and realism, rooted in both personal drama and historical scope.

Garfield, a two-time Oscar nominee (Hacksaw Ridge, tick, tick… BOOM!), brings both gravitas and a deep connection to the setting, having been raised in the UK. His recent projects include the romantic drama We Live in Time and the upcoming After the Hunt with Julia Roberts.

Paul Greengrass, known for United 93, Captain Phillips, and the Bourne series, is writing and directing the film. Production is being handled by Jason Blum (Blumhouse), alongside Greg Goodman, Joanna Kaye, and Greengrass himself.
