Netflix has officially greenlit a fourth season of its acclaimed political drama The Diplomat, with the announcement made during the streamer's Upfronts event in New York City. The renewal comes just ahead of the highly anticipated Season 3 premiere this fall.
Created by Debora Cahn, who also serves as showrunner and executive producer, The Diplomat follows the turbulent and high-stakes world of international diplomacy through the eyes of Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell. A career diplomat with a knack for managing crisis zones, Kate finds herself navigating treacherous political waters in London as the U.S. Ambassador to the UK, a post she never intended to take.
Season 3 throws Kate into deeper chaos. Having accused Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) of orchestrating a terrorist plot and simultaneously gunning for her job, Kate suddenly finds herself contending with even greater consequences: the President is dead, her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell) might be responsible, and Grace Penn has ascended to the presidency. As Hal pushes his agenda to position Kate as the next VP, she is forced to confront a reality she never envisioned, complete with shifting power dynamics, fragile alliances, and a charged relationship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi). Her growing rapport with the new First Gentleman, Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), only complicates matters further.
Joining Russell in the ensemble cast are Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh. The series has consistently drawn critical acclaim and strong viewership. Executive producers alongside Cahn include Janice Williams, Alex Graves, and Keri Russell.
