Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema have announced that The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, starring and directed by Andy Serkis, will be released on December 17, 2027.
Interestingly, all six movies in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies debuted in December and went on to become box office hits. Other movies slated to release in 2027 are Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter and another Star Wars movie from Disney.
The Hunt for Gollum was first announced last year. Serkis is known for directing Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and is currently involved in the animation film Animal Farm, based on George Orwell’s novel. He has been portraying Gollum through motion capture since The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002).
Earlier, Boyens told Empire magazine that The Hunt for Gollum is “quite an intense story” that “falls after the birthday party of Bilbo and before the Mines of Moria. It’s a specific chunk of incredible untold story, told through the perspective of this incredible creature." The cast members for the film are yet to be finalised.
Peter Jackson, along with his The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit films' team Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are joining hands once again to back the new film. Screenwriters are Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. It will be executive produced by Ken Kamins, with Serkis and The Imaginarium’s Jonathan Cavendish.
