Former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter has revealed why film producer Harvey Weinstein was removed from the magazine's Oscars party guest list even before he was convicted of sexual harassment and rape.
In his upcoming book When the Going Was Good, Carter revealed how Weinstein was the sole celebrity who was banned from Oscars party.
According to Deadline, Carter in an interview with Page Six explained that Weinstein would often arrive at the event with more guests than his invitation allowed and would bully the event staff.
He also shared, "He was rude to the staff and I didn’t like that." The ban, which was temporarily removed, was held back again as his behaviour was unacceptable. While many thought that his tone and behaviour might have been due to his consumption of alcohol, the editor clarified, "It was not from drink. It was just within him," emphasising that it was in his character.
From 1992-2017, Carter served as the editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair. Following the death of Hollywood agent Swifty Lazar, he took over the baton and started hosting Oscar parties since 1994, which became one of the most glitziest events whose invites were hot-selling in Hollywood. So much that editor Sara Marks who manages the list was often subjected to "bribery, threats, and even abuse" from those seeking a ticket. But Weinstein's ban stemmed from the disrespect meted out to the staff.
Since 2017, more than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment, assault, or rape. These allegations sparked the #MeToo movement, with many women coming forward to share their stories. In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of one count of criminal sexual assault and one count of rape in the third degree, leading to a 23-year prison sentence.
In 2022, he was found guilty of three additional charges in Los Angeles and sentenced to another 16 years. However, Weinstein's New York convictions were overturned in 2023 due to "egregious errors" made by the judge, according to Deadline. Weinstein is now awaiting a retrial scheduled for April 15, 2025, while serving time at Rikers Island.
