Actor Austin Abrams, known for his roles in Euphoria and Wolfs, is being eyed to star in Zach Cregger’s reboot of horror action movie Resident Evil for Sony Pictures.

The latest film, which is set as a tribute to the original Japanese video game franchise by Capcom, is scheduled to hit theatres on September 18, 2026. Cregger directs the film from a script written by him along with Shay Hatten.

Known for his films Miss March, The Civil War on Drugs and his breakout film Barbarian, Cregger is awaiting the release of his next feature Weapons, which also stars Abrams along with a star-studded cast including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong, among others. The film is scheduled for release on August 8 this year.

If the deal goes through, it will be the second time Abrams and Cregger are joining hands for a project. The film is being planned to be shot in Europe.

The previous six Resident Evil movies directed by Paul WS Anderson were released between 2002-2016. It followed Alice (Milla Jovovich), a former security specialist and covert operative who battles the Umbrella Corporation, whose bioweapons have triggered a zombie apocalypse. In 2021, a reboot film, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, was released. While they were all a mix of horror, action and sci-fi genres, the upcoming film, according to the makers, will solely focus on horror, along with elements of a wilderness survival thriller.

Constantin Film is both producing and co-financing the new Resident Evil film. Its production team includes Robert Kulzer from Constantin, Roy Lee (Barbarian, Minecraft) and Miri Yoon (Woman of the Hour, Weapons) from Vertigo Entertainment, along with PlayStation Productions.
