Rege-Jean Page is set to star in and produce an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' novel The Count of Monte Cristo, reports Deadline. Mike Larocca and Michael Schaefer's banner Department M is backing the project.

Dumas' novel revolves around a sailor, who endures years of unjust suffering after his imprisonment, gets out of prison, acquires immense wealth, and methodically executes a complex plan to avenge himself against those who betrayed him.

The Count of Monte Cristo already has multiple adaptations, including 2002's Kevin Reynolds directorial starring Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce.

Talking about the project, Jean Page stated, "Bold, adventurous storytelling with heart is the reason I got into this business, and is the backbone of everything we're making. Working alongside incredible collaborators, A Mighty Stranger is building a slate of creative-led projects that will broaden the cultural lens through pure entertainment. That's why we're so excited to be bringing The Count Of Monte Cristo to global audiences, unlocking the depths of Dumas' work in ways not seen yet."

Jean Page's upcoming projects also include Black Bag, the Steven Soderbergh directorial that also stars Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Tom Burke, Marisa Abela, Naomie Harris, and Pierce Brosnan. Black Bag is slated for a March 28 release in theatres. The actor recently expressed his desire to return to the Bridgerton universe as well.
