Video game creator Hideo Kojima's hugely popular Death Stranding game is all set to get an animated film with an original story. This is a separate project, different from the live-action film that is also in development from A24 and Kojima Productions.
Deadline has confirmed that Aaron Guzikowski is scripting the animated film which will be set in the same universe as the game. He has previously worked on the critically acclaimed 2013 film Prisoners and Raised by Wolves show (2020). The film is expected to be similar to the Predator anthology series Predator: Killer of Killers on Hulu, which was recently released and the upcoming John Wick animated prequel.
The game is set in the United States following a cataclysmic event which caused destructive creatures to begin roaming the Earth. The player controls Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier tasked with delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network.
Alongside Reedus, the game features actors Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and Lindsay Wagner, in addition to the likenesses of film directors Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn, as supporting characters.
A sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, is in development for PlayStation 5 and scheduled for release on June 26.
Line Mileage, which announced the project, is an La-based animation studio that backs many animated films and TV series worldwide. It is best known for Netflix shows like Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, and more.
