Elemental director Peter Sohn tapped to helm Incredibles 3

Pixar has officially set the wheels in motion for Incredibles 3, and the studio is passing the directing baton to Elemental and The Good Dinosaur filmmaker Peter Sohn.

Brad Bird, the creative force behind the first two Incredibles films, will not be directing this time but is deeply involved as he’s writing the screenplay and producing the threequel alongside Soul producer Dana Murray.

Sohn, a long-time Pixar veteran, was personally chosen by Bird and Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter to lead the next chapter of the beloved superhero saga. Their decision reflects a long-standing professional relationship: Sohn has contributed to every animated feature Bird has made, from The Incredibles (2004) and Incredibles 2 (2018) to this year’s Ray Gunn, with Bird having acted as a mentor to Sohn throughout his career.

Sohn’s recent directorial outing, Elemental, scored an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature and further cemented his storytelling chops. He’s also known for his voice work in several Pixar classics, including Ratatouille, Monsters University, and Lightyear.

Disney first announced Incredibles 3 during its D23 Expo in August 2024, revealing that Bird was “developing” the project. The Incredibles franchise centres on Bob and Helen Parr (voiced by Craig T Nelson and Holly Hunter), a suburban couple secretly living as superheroes Mr Incredible and Elastigirl while raising three kids, Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Spencer Fox), and the unpredictable Jack-Jack, each with powers of their own. Samuel L Jackson voices their trusted ally Frozone, aka Lucius Best.

Villains in the earlier films were just as memorable, from Jason Lee’s fan-favourite Syndrome in the original to Incredibles 2’s sibling duo Evelyn and Winston Deaver, voiced by Catherine Keener and Bob Odenkirk, with Sophia Bush joining the sequel as young superhero Voyd.
