Actor-Comedian Eddie Murphy will headline his own film in the Shrek franchise, as the actor confirms that a film based on the character Donkey, which he voices, is in production. Murphy is also reprising the role of Donkey in the upcoming entrant to the Shrek franchise, Shrek 5.
Beginning in 2001, the Shrek franchise told the story of the eponymous ogre, and his adventures with his wife Fiona and his companions, including Gingerbread Man, Pinocchio, Puss in Boots, among others. Beyond the Shrek films, the franchise also includes spinoffs based on Puss in Boots.
Speaking to ScreenRant, Murphy said, "Donkey's [film] going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie, Donkey's going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys. They've written this funny story. We're doing that, starting that in September."
The upcoming film, Shrek 5, which is directed by Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, sees the return of Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Murphy as Donkey. Zendaya will join the cast, voicing Shrek and Fiona's daughter, Felicia. Shrek 5, will release theatrically on December 23, 2026.
