Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Emilia Pérez, has apologised for her controversial social media posts that recently resurfaced. The posts expressed contentious perspectives about George Floyd, diversity at the Academy Awards, and Muslims.

Speaking to Variety, Gascón acknowledged the hurt caused by her past posts. "As someone in a marginalised community," she stated, "I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

One post from 2020 came with an image of Muslim family members at a restaurant, including a person wearing a burka. The post criticised Islamic dress for women, calling it "deeply disgusting of humanity."

Another 2021 post expressed disdain for the beliefs of people of Islamic, Christian, Catholic, and other faiths, labeling them as "morons that violate human rights."

Following George Floyd's death in 2020, Gascón wrote that she believed few genuinely cared about Floyd, whom she described as a "drug addict swindler." She added that his death was being used to demonstrate a false narrative about racial injustice.

Regarding the 2021 Oscars, Gascón criticised the ceremony's focus on "independent and protest films," suggesting it resembled an "Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M." For your information, 8M represents International Women's Day. Gascón also deemed the award show "ugly."

Gascón's apology comes just after she made history as the first-ever openly trans actor to earn an Oscar nomination (for Emilia Pérez).
