In an Instagram video, which she captioned with an apology and a flag of Mexico and which now stands deleted, singer-actor Selena Gomez cried as she reacted to the US government's measures against immigration. Gomez, a third-generation American-Mexican, stated that the government's decision to deport immigrants has a profound effect on her people.
The singer-actor stated, "All my people are getting attacked, the children. I do not understand. I am so sorry. I wish I could do something, but I cannot. I do not know what to do. I will try everything, I promise."
Severe online vitriol forced Gomez to delete the video, but not before it garnered more than 30 million views on social media. Subsequently, Gomez put out an Instagram story, where she stated, "Apparently it is not OK to show empathy for people."
This is not the first time Gomez publicly expressed her concern and empathy for immigrants. She has made a documentary titled Living Undocumented, exploring the experience of the undocumented immigrant population in the US.
