A24 and Picturestart are joining hands for a new upcoming film The Masque of Red Death, a dark comedy based on the short story by noted author Edgar Allen Poe. The makers are in negotiations to cast Sydney Sweeney for the lead role in the film which will be written, directed and executive produced by Charlie Polinger

The story follows a prince who attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. However, the new version's story has not been revealed yet. Reportedly, the film will begin shooting this year.

Sweeney, known for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, had a packed 2024, starring in the successful rom-com Anyone But You and the Neon horror-thriller Immaculate. She also appeared in HBO’s Reality, which earned her a Critics Choice Award. Currently, she is working on Lionsgate’s adaptation of the novel The Housemaid.

Playwright, director, and auteur Polinger is currently working on The Plague, which is in post production. It is an independently made film featuring Joel Edgerton. Produced by Spooky Pictures and Lizzie Shapiro, the project is backed by Imagenation.
