The US streamer of Natasha Lyonne's Poker Face, namely Peacock, dropped a set of images that give a first look at the characters in the comedy-drama with the inverted detective storyline, occasionally known as "howcatchem". A "howcatchem", unlike a "whodunit", shows who the perpetrator is at the beginning and follows the story as it reveals how they are caught. While Poker Face Season 1 was released in 2023, its second season is scheduled to release in the first half of this year.
Season One of Poker Face saw Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), a casino worker with an uncanny ability to tell when people are lying, go on the run following a death. Along her journey, she meets various characters and solves crimes.
In a joint statement, Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson said, "Charlie Cale is back on the run, and in season two we’ve taken her journey to the next level, one murder mystery at a time. From minor league baseball to big box retail, from funeral homes to alligator farms and even a grade school talent show, Charlie navigates her crime-solving existential road trip with deadpan wit, human empathy, and her signature uncanny lie-detecting ability. To bring season two to life, we pulled visual inspiration from American ’70s cinema, all the stuff we love like Robert Altman, Bob Rafelson, Peter Bogdanovich. But the backbone of this show is TV — the kind of TV we grew up watching, episodic case-of-the-week gems like Columbo and The Rockford Files and Quantum Leap. Each episode is a mini-movie, existing in its own world with a unique tone and vibe, featuring an eccentric lot of characters played by a truly gonzo parade of guest stars. We still can’t believe we got to work with rockstars like Cynthia Erivo, Katie Holmes, John Mulaney, and Awkwafina (and many many more, the list is kinda dizzying) who all dove into the game with joy and came ready to play. Twelve killer new episodes are coming your way. Buckle up and see you on the road!"
Season Two of the series will feature Awkwafina, John Cho, Sherry Cola, Kevin Corrigan, Cynthia Erivo, Giancarlo Esposito, Davionte “GaTa” Ganter, Patti Harrison, Corey Hawkins, Gaby Hoffmann, Katie Holmes, Carol Kane, David Krumholtz, Melanie Lynskey, Ben Marshall, Margo Martindale, John Mulaney, Kumail Nanjiani, Katherine Narducci, BJ Novak, Ego Nwodim, Haley Joel Osment, Simon Rex, Sam Richardson, Jason Ritter, Alia Shawkat, Cliff “Method Man” Smith and Justin Theroux. Natasha Lyonne has directed two episodes in season two, including the finale.
Poker Face season one also had Benjamin Bratt and Simon Helberg in recurring roles. Guest stars for season one included Rain Johnson collaborators Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Noah Segan, along with Adrien Brody, Ron Perlman, Hong Chau, Lil Rel Howery, Chloe Sevigny, Judith Light, S Epatha Mekerson, Tim Meadows, Jameela Jamil, Tim Blake Nelson, Luis Guzman, Stephanie Hsu, Clea DuVall, and Rhea Perlman.
Season one of Poker Face is currently streaming on JioHotstar.
