Acclaimed filmmaker and Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has lined up his next project, Later The War, which he will both write and direct. The film has secured an impressive cast, with Eddie Redmayne, Tessa Thompson, and Patsy Ferran set to star.

Kaufman’s script is adapted from Debby’s Dream House, a short story by Iddo Gefen, originally published in the collection Jerusalem Beach. The story revolves around a man who specialises in manufacturing dreams for people but eventually finds himself creating nightmares instead.

While specific plot details for the film remain undisclosed, Kaufman’s signature surreal storytelling and psychological depth suggest a thought-provoking adaptation. Ken Kao and Josh Rosenbaum of Waypoint Entertainment will serve as producers, joined by Sarah Green of Brace Cove Productions and Steven Demmler.

Redmayne, fresh off his critically acclaimed performance in Peacock’s Day of the Jackal, will take on a leading role in the film. His work in the series, which co-stars Lashana Lynch, earned him both Golden Globe and Critics Choice nominations.

Thompson, known for her diverse and dynamic roles, has a packed schedule ahead. She is set to appear in Netflix’s upcoming series His & Hers and will also headline the feature film Hedda.

Ferran, meanwhile, continues to make waves in both film and theatre. She will soon be seen alongside Robert Pattinson in Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi film Mickey 17. Additionally, she has earned acclaim for her performance on Broadway in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Kaufman won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. He last wrote the animated film Orion and the Dark for Netflix.
