Kevin Zegers, best known for his roles in Transamerica and Dawn of the Dead, has been tapped to portray legendary ice hockey player Theo Fleury in Fleury, an upcoming biopic directed by Michael Young. Production on the film is set to begin in June.
The film is based on Playing with Fire: The Highest Highs and Lowest Lows of Theo Fleury, the bestselling memoir written by Fleury and Kirstie McLellan Day. It will chronicle the celebrated athlete’s turbulent life, capturing both his triumphs and struggles. A decorated NHL star, Fleury won an Olympic gold medal, secured a Stanley Cup championship, and was named an All-Star seven times. Yet, beneath his relentless drive and success on the ice, he endured deep personal turmoil. The film will explore his harrowing experience of childhood abuse by a trusted coach, his subsequent battles with addiction, and his eventual journey toward healing and advocacy.
Also joining the cast is former NHL forward and US Olympian Ryan Malone. Young penned the screenplay alongside Adrian Todd Zuniga, and the two are also producing the project alongside Kyle David Crosby and Gabrielle Almagor. Executive producers include Fleury, Zuniga, Max Zell, and Brian Murray.
Zegers, who previously played AAA-level hockey, will get back on the ice ahead of filming by participating in Skate for LA Strong, a celebrity and NHL All-Star Alumni hockey game supporting L.A. wildfire relief. Zegers, who has recently appeared in TV series such as Rebel and The Rookie: Feds, is also set to star in Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming Yellowstone spin-off, The Madison.
