Earlier, we reported about Denzel Washington missing out on an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor for his performance in Ridley Scott's Gladiator II. The actor has opened up about it in a recent conversation with The New York Times. Touching up on working on the Broadway revival of Othello on one day and not having an Oscar nomination on the other, the actor jokingly said, "I’m so upset."

Denzel Washington also added that he has been part of cinema for long enough and becoming "wiser" to understand that it is "exciting" to "talk less" and "understand more." The actor plays a power-hungry character named Macrinus, with a stable of gladiators, in the film.

The actor's response serves as a throwback to the time when he smiled to a funny Jim Carrey speech at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards. Carrey said, "I'm two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey. When I go to sleep at night, I'm not just a guy going to sleep. I'm two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey going to some well needed shut-eye. And when I dream, I don't dream any old dream. No sir. I dream of being three-time Golden Globe winning actor Jim Carrey. Because then I would be enough. It would finally be true. And I can stop this terrible search. For what I know ultimately won't fulfill me."

Denzel Washington gave a wry smile, seemingly stemming from the realisation that Carrey was referring to the futility of searching for awards and recognition.

Washington has two Golden Globe awards from 10 nominations; he earned one in 1990 for his performance in Glory and the other in 2002 for Training Day. He also has two Academy Awards; he won best supporting actor for Glory and best actor for Training Day.

Recently, the actor stirred speculation about his imminent retirement as he remarked, "There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in."
