Earlier, we reported about Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón apologising for her controversial remarks about diversity at the Academy Awards, George Floyd, and Muslims. Subsequently, Gascón, the first openly trans actor to earn an Oscar nomination, has deleted her X account. Now, her Emilia Pérez co-star Zoe Saldaña, who also has a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, has talked about the matter at a recent Question and Answer session held in London. "I'm still processing everything that has transpired in the last couple of days, and I'm sad," stated Saldaña, who attended the session in place of Gascón.
Expressing her disapproval of her co-star's past comments, Saldaña stated, "I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group."
Earlier, a series of tweets from Gascón's account surfaced again where she described Islamic clothing for women as "deeply disgusting of humanity," expressed disdain for the beliefs of people of Islamic, Christian, Catholic, and other faiths, labeling them as "morons that violate human rights," and called Floyd a "drug addict swindler."
Recently, Gascón apologised for her comments, telling Variety, "I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness."
The two actors play important roles in Emilia Pérez, the Jacques Audiard directorial that has earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
