The trailer for Oscar winner Chloe Zhao's Hamnet was released recently. The film, which is based on Maggie O’Farrell's novel of the same name, stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley in the lead.
Zhao is the second woman ever to win the Oscar for Best Direction, for her work on Nomadland. She has written the script alongside author O'Farrell. Steven Spielberg is producing the film alongside Sam Mendes. Other producers include Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, and Nicolas Gonda. Amblin Entertainment and Focus Features are the banners backing the film.
Mescal will play William Shakespeare with Buckley as Agnes, Shakespeare's wife, in Hamnet. The film will centre on the origin of Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, which stems from the couple's loss of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet. Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn also star in the film.
The Tragedy of Hamlet follows the story of Danish prince Hamlet, who sets out to seek revenge against his uncle Claudius, for murdering Hamlet's father. The play has also been adapted in Hindi by Vishal Bharadwaj as Haider, which starred Shahid Kapoor in the title role.
