Zack Snyder is stepping away from zombies, superheroes and space to finally get ahold of his most ambitious war drama film. Later this month, Snyder, who last helmed Netflix's Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, will begin production on The Last Photograph, a long-under-development drama which originated in the mid-2000s.
The feature film will star Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, actors who previously played roles in the Rebel Moon films. This indie film will have a small production value when compared to the biggies Snyder has helmed all these years.
Colombia, Iceland and Los Angeles are some of the several locations that the film will be shot at, across the globe. Deborah Snyder, wife of the filmmaker, will serve as creative partner along with Snyder, who produces alongside Wesley Coller under their Stone Quarry banner. Hollywood Gang Productions' Gianni Nunnari is also producing.
Snyder has also zeroed in on Hans Zimmer, Steven Doar and Omer Benyamin as the composers for this film. Kurt Johnstad, Snyder's long-time collaborator who has written 300 and Rebel Moon, will also be penning the script for The Last Photograph.
The official plot of the film reads, “An ex-DEA operative must return to the mountains of South America in an effort to find his missing niece and nephew, following the brutal murders of their diplomat parents. Enlisting the help of a washed-up junkie war photographer, the only person to have seen the face of the killers, he sets out, determined to find the children and the truth, but soon learns he must also face the ghosts of his past. Their journey into the unknown takes them further and further away from civilisation, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal.”
The project has undergone significant changes during its two-decade development. Initially set in Afghanistan, it followed a war correspondent who survives an attack on a group of Americans. In the early 2010s, Christian Bale and Sean Penn were attached to star, but the project was put on hold when the director, Snyder, focused on his DC movies.
Apart from The Last Photograph, Snyder has many more projects under development, including Brawler, an MMA slugfest, and another LAPD action thriller.
