
Ian McKellen, the actor who essayed the role of the wizard, Gandalf, in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, recently revealed the involvement of another major character in the upcoming film which is set in the same universe. Andy Serkis, who portrayed Gollum, will reprise his role and direct The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Accoording to Entertainment Weekly, the actor was speaking at a fan event for the film series in London, when he said, "I hear there's going to be another movie based in Middle-earth, and it's going to start filming in May. It's going to be directed by Gollum, and it's all about Gollum. I'll tell you two secrets about the casting: There's a character in the movie called Frodo, and there's a character in the movie called Gandalf."
Frodo Baggins is the protagonist of The Lord of the Rings films, and was portrayed by Elijah Wood. McKellen essayed the role of the wizard Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy, with Peter Jackson directing all six films. It has not been confirmed whether McKellen will reprise the role of Gandalf or whether Wood will return as Frodo, but the film is set to release on December 17, 2027.
McKellen will join hands with director Steven Soderbergh for The Christophers, which will also charge Michaela Cole and James Corden. He will also reprise of Erik Lensherr/Magneto in Avengers: Doomsday, which will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
