On Thursday, Prime Video dropped a trailer for its upcoming series The Girlfriend, starring Robin Wright and Olivia Cooke in the lead roles. The six-episode-long thriller will start streaming on the platform from September 10 onwards. The adaptation of Michelle Frances' eponymous novel follows a woman (Wright) with a beloved spouse, a cherished son (Laurie Davidson), and a stellar career. However, the woman’s seemingly perfect life starts unraveling as her son visits their home with his girlfriend (Cooke). Following a tense meeting, she is certain that the girl hides a secret and dates her son to scale up the social ladder. Is the woman suffering from paranoia, or is her suspicion justified? “The truth is a matter of perspective,” according to the official synopsis. “There are two sides to every story,” reads the tagline of the series.
The Girlfriend also stars Waleed Zuaiter, Tayna Moodie, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Karen Henthorn, Anna Chancellor, Francesca Corney, and Leo Suter.
The series is a collaborative effort between Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios. It has Caroline Norris and Jonathan Cavendish serving as producers. Executive producers include actor Wright herself, Will Tennant, John Zois, Phil Robertson, Dave Clarke, Michelle Frances, and Gabbie Asher.
It has been adapted for the small screen by Gabbie Asher and Naomi Sheldon, who also contributed to the episode scripts. Additional episodes are penned by Helen Kingston, Polly Cavendish, Marek Horn, Isis Davis, Smita Bhide, Matt Evans, and Ava Wong Davies.
