In Titanic producer Jon Landau's latest memoir, the filmmaker revealed that Matthew McConaughey missed out on playing Jack Dawson in the James Cameron directorial because he would not do without his Texan accent. Landau revealed in his memoir that Cameron wanted McConaughey to try a different accent for the character during his audition, but the actor allegedly expressed his unwillingness to do so. The producer attributed the actor's choice to him eventually losing the role to Leonardo DiCaprio.
Titanic follows the romantic relationship between DiCaprio's Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet's Rose DeWitt Bukater. The ship's collision with an iceberg also wrecked their relationship once and for all. The film won 11 awards at the 70th Academy Awards, comprising the categories Picture, Directing, Art Direction, Editing, Visual Effects, Cinematography, Costume Design, Music (Original Dramatic Score), Music (Original Song), Sound, and Sound Effects Editing.
McConaughey, meanwhile, dismissed the speculation about Cameron even offering him a role in the film a long time ago. Back in the day, he had described all the news about him declining the role as mere gossip.
McConaughey has enjoyed a successful career, regardless of whether Landau's claim about Titanic is true, winning a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club in 2014 and earning critical acclaim for many other films. While his distinctive accent is one of his biggest assets, he has used a less-pronounced version of it for the character Buster Moon in Sing. He has also used a fake Australian accent during college and managed to deceive the locals.
