Three years ago, Netflix premiered the first season of Heartstopper, the series adaptation of Alice Oseman's graphic novels featuring Joe Locke and Kit Connor, on April 22, 2022. On Tuesday, on the third-year anniversary of the first season premiere, Netflix announced that the series will conclude with a full-length feature film, in lieu of the fourth season.
While season 1 of Heartstopper was based on volumes 1 and 2 of Oseman’s eponymous novel, seasons 2 and 3 covered volumes 3, 4 and 5. The upcoming feature film will be based on the impending volume 6 of the graphic novel series as well as the Nick and Charlie novella. Oseman is back as the writer of the feature film.
While volume 6 of the novel is yet to receive a publishing date, Oseman indicates that the novel will be out before the series’ conclusion. The first two seasons of Heartstopper were helmed by Euros Lyn, while Andy Newbery helmed the third. Still Alice director Walsh Westmoreland is onboard as the director of the feature-length film, which will have Connor and Locke serve as executive producers in addition to playing Nick and Charlie.
The Heartstopper feature film will naturally pick up from where it left the audience at the end of season 3. “But, with Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet,” reads the synopsis of the finale.
Alice Oseman, Euros Lyn, Patrick Walters, Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, who have served as executive producers for the first three seasons of Heartstopper, will continue to perform the role in the feature film. With See-Saw Films back as the production banner, the finale is scheduled to go on floors in summer 2025.
