Following the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the sequel to the 1988 iconic Tim Burton film, Warner Bros have confirmed that a third film is in development. Not just that, CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have revealed that a sequel to The Goonies, along with a new instalment of Gremlins are in the works in an interview with Deadline.
A sequel to the recently-released A Minecraft Movie is also being developed. While speaking about Minecraft and Beetlejuice 3, Mike De Luca noted that the initial stages of the films are yet to begin, but that "the ink might not be dry on the deals yet." Abdy also confirmed the other projects on the slate including a new Matrix film written by Drew Goddard, and Amblin and Chris Columbus' collaboration on new films in the Gremlins and The Goonies' franchises. As earlier reported, The Cat in the Hat book written by Dr. Seuss is also in the making, scheduled for a release next year.
An update for The Lord of the Rings fans was also provided with Abdy confirming that the new spinoff The Hunt for Gollum's script is being locked in May. "There’s really great stuff on the horizon," said Abdy, expressing her excitement.
In February, it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing sequels to both Gremlins and The Goonies. The sequel to the 1985 Richard Donner film is set to be produced by Steven Spielberg with Columbus, who is the writer of the original. It was also reported that Potsy Panciroli, the writer and director of Old Henry, is set to write the script for the film, but no confirmation on a story was released.
Gremlins, also written by Columbus, was first released in 1984 and directed by Joe Dante. A sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch hit theatres in 1990 while the third film which was in development at the studio never took off. Additionally, an animated series on Gremlins titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai was released in Max in 2023. The second season, Gremlins: The Wild Batch, premiered in 2024 and 2025 as two parts.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was released last year to generally positive reviews. Starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Jenna Ortega, among others, the sequel went on to earn almost $500 million at the global box office. A Minecraft Movie, which released in theatres last week, is growing to become a blockbuster with its box office revenues, outperforming expectations. The film, starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, and Emma Myers, among others is on its way to clinch the $500 million mark in global revenues.
