
Worlds will collide and a war is imminent. Disney's first trailer of Tron: Ares, the highly anticipated third installment in the Tron franchise has set the stage for an impending war between the digital realm and the real world.
15 years after Tron: Legacy was released, Tron: Ares, a standalone sequel to the 2010 film, is set to hit theatres. The science fiction action film is directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
According to the logline, Jared Leto is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with AI beings. "Ready? Because there’s no going back," says Jeff Bridges, who starred as Kevin Flynn in the original 1982 film.
Apart from Leto, the film also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan.
Producers for Tron: Ares are Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges.
Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer. The film is slated to release in theatres on October 10 this year.
A cult film, Tron (1982) was created by Steven Lisberger and Bonnie MacBird. It revolves around Kevin Flynn, a genius computer programmer and video game developer who becomes transported inside a digital virtual reality known as "The Grid", where he interacts with programs in his quest to escape. Tron: Legacy, directed by Joseph Kosinski takes place 28 years after the events of the first film and depicts the attempts of Flynn's son Sam in retrieving his lost father from within the Grid.
Since 1982, the film series has evolved into video games, a comic book miniseries, animated TV series Tron: Uprising and even theme park attractions. A short film Tron: The Next Day, taking place one day after the events of Tron: Legacy was released in 2011.
