Trailer of Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme gets the absurdity right

The makers of filmmaker Wes Anderson's latest film, The Phoenician Scheme, dropped the trailer video of the film on Monday.

The film that has Benicio del Toro play Zsa-zsa Korda, one of Europe's richest men; Mia Threapleton as Sister Liesl, his daughter who turns a nun; and Michael Cera as tutor Bjorn Lund.

The trailer glimpse was atypical of Wes' earlier films, replete with dark humour and absurd treatment. The director has made several stylised films such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, Fantastic Mr Fox and Asteroid City. The plot details, except for the struggles the family faces in its business, are not known yet.

Anderson directs the film with the script from his Asteroid City and Moonrise Kingdom collaborator, Roman Coppola.

Apart from del Toro, Threapleton, and Cera, the film's star cast is rounded up by Riz Ahmed, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Mathieu Amalric, Richard Ayoade, Jeffrey Wright, Benedict Cumberbatch, Scarlett Johansson, Hope Davis, and Rupert Friend.

The Phoenician Scheme is produced by Focus Features, the banner behind the filmmaker's Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and Asteroid City (2023).

The film will get a limited release on May 30, followed by an expansion on June 6.
