Odessa A’zion is the latest to join the cast of Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme. The film stars actors Timothee Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, and American singer and fashion designer Tyler, the Creator in lead roles.
The makers have also announced a few new additions to the cast including magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank panelist and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary, and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie will write the film. It brings Safdie and A24 together after the latter served as the distributor for the former's previous two features, Good Time and Uncut Gems, both of which were co-directed with his brother Benny Safdie. The duo are also producing the film alongside Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas.
Plot details of the film have not been disclosed yet. It was previously rumored to be loosely inspired by the pro-ping-pong player Marty Reisman. But sources close to the production have mentioned that it will be a fictionalised original film.
Marty Supreme marks a comeback to directorial duties for Josh Safdie after the Adam Sandler starrer and his maiden film as a solo filmmaker following his 2008 debut The Pleasure of Being Robbed.
Safdie and Ronald Bronstein will produce the film alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24.
Most recently, A’zion starred alongside Yara Shahidi in the Amazon romantic comedy Sitting in Bars with Cake. Her other recent projects include Jennifer Esposito’s directorial debut Fresh Kills and Hulu’s reimagining of Hellraiser, along with appearances in series like Ghosts and Grand Army. Currently, she is filming Sony’s video game adaptation Until Dawn. In addition, she will soon be featured in the crime thriller She Rides Shotgun with Taron Egerton, the indie film Nickels alongside Rob Riggle, and an untitled HBO series with Rachel Sennott.
Since 2001, Jillette has been performing alongside his silent magic partner Teller at the Rio in Las Vegas. They’ve appeared in television shows such as Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Penn & Teller: Bullshit!. Jillette's acting credits include films like Hackers and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, as well as guest spots on Friends, Modern Family, and The Celebrity Apprentice.
This is O'Leary's first movie. Known as 'Mr. Wonderful', O’Leary is a Canadian businessman best known for being the hard-shelled investor on Shark Tank. He has appeared as himself on other series including The Neighbors, Dr. Ken and Grace and Frankie.
Ferrara is widely recognized as the director of intense crime thrillers such as The Driller Killer, Ms. 45, King of New York, and The Funeral. He also had an acting role in Josh and Benny Safdie’s 2009 film Daddy Longlegs, along with appearances in several of his own movies.
