Academy Award nominee Demian Bichir has joined the cast of The Black Phone 2, Universal’s sequel to the 2021 hit horror film from director Scott Derrickson. The filmmaker is returning to direct the sequel from a script he co-wrote with partner C Robert Cargill.
Details of the plot of The Black Phone 2 and Bichir's role are under wraps, but it is confirmed that the original cast members will return for the sequel.
Ethan Hawke played the role of The Grabber, a criminal responsible for kidnapping several children with the cruel methods he's mastered over time. The other cast members set to return include Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies and Miguel Mora.
The sequel will be produced by Derrickson, Cargill, and Jason Blum of Blumhouse. Joe Hill, the author of the short story that inspired the first film, will act as an executive producer.
The Black Phone revolves around a 13-year-old boy who is abducted by a child killer and locked in a soundproof basement in a suburban neighbourhood. This thriller turns into horror when the child starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer’s previous victims.
Nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 2011 romantic drama A Better Life, Bichir is currently featured in the world premiere of Angelina Jolie’s Without Blood, an adaptation of Alessandro Baricco’s novel, where he stars alongside Salma Hayek. His recent film credits also include Godzilla vs. Kong, Robin Wright’s Land, George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky, and Warner Bros’ successful horror film The Nun.
He is also known for working on shows like Let the Right One In, Grand Hotel, The Bridge and Weeds. Up next, he has Beacon, a Tribeca film that he also executive produced, and El Dentista, a film from Fabula based in Mexico City.
