Universal TV has released a new teaser to the upcoming film Wicked which introduces us to Glinda The Good, played by Ariana Grande and her qualities. While we see her being popular among her peers, she is also determined in her goals. We also see glimpses of Jonathan Bailey in his element and Ariana's friendship with Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo).
The official synopsis of Wicked reads, "Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads, and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself and to those around her will have unexpected and shocking consequences for her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West."
Directed by Jon M Chu, Wicked is the first of a two-part film adaptation of Holzman and Schwartz's stage musical of the same name. The Broadway musical is itself based on author Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.
The project adapts characters that originated in L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and were brought to life in the Oscar-winning 1939 film musical The Wizard of Oz, starring Judy Garland as Dorothy.
Wicked is a prequel to the iconic events of The Wizard of Oz.The cast of the film also includes Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James as Pfannee and ShenShen, Marissa Bode as Elphaba's sister Nessarose, Keala Settle as Miss Coddle, Aaron Teoh as Avaric, and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikidik.
The first part of the film is scheduled for release on November 22, 2024, while Wicked: Part Two will be released in December 2025.
