During a recent episode of The Tonight Show, actor Adam Sandler confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 is all set to go on floors in a couple of weeks. As Sandler promised, production on the Happy Gilmore sequel is underway on Monday, which also coincides with the actor's birthday. Sandler hinted at the news with a photograph of his hockey sweater from the first film. He captioned the post, "It ain’t over. The way I see it, we’ve only just begun." Then, Netflix confirmed the news with a similar post.
Released in 1996 and directed by Dennis Dugan, Happy Gilmore stars Adam Sandler in the title role. The cast also includes Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, and the late Carl Weathers. It tells the story of an unsuccessful ice hockey player who discovers a newfound talent for golf and partakes in a golf tournament to save his grandmother's home from foreclosure.
Besides teasing a cameo from footballer Travis Kelce, Sandler said in a recent interview that director and screenwriter Benny Safdie also plays a key role in Happy Gilmore 2. The film reunites Safdie with his Uncut Gems costar Sandler. McDonald also reprises his role, Happy's nemesis Shoot McGavin, from the original. The makers are yet to disclose further details about the cast and plot of the film.
Kyle Newacheck, known for What We Do In The Shadows, is directing the sequel to Happy Gilmore. Sandler also serves as the writer alongside Happy Gilmore cowriter Tim Herlihy.
