Earlier, we reported that Lionsgate Movies retracted their previously released trailer of Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming film, Megalopolis. The decision followed the discovery that the trailer has misquoted critiques of some of Coppola's most popular films, such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, and Bram Stoker's Dracula. On Thursday, the production house unveiled a new trailer for the film, without such lines from previous criticisms.
The trailer shows Adam Driver's Cesar wanting to create and build a new utopian dream city, Megalopolis, so how we live now is not the only way to live. However, he is met with opposition from Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), while his daughter socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel) is caught in between her father, and her lover, Cesar.
Megalopolis is set in an imagined modern America, in the fictional city of New Rome. The official plotline reads, "New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero (Nathalie Emmanuel), the mayor's daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves."
Franchis Ford Coppola is known for having been one of New Hollywood's prominent filmmakers, having directed films like The Godfather Trilogy (1972–1990), The Conversation (1974), and Apocalypse Now (1979).
Megalopolis stars an ensemble cast that includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, DB Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.
Marking Coppola's comeback as a director after 2011's Twixt and his first feature in the sci-fi genre, Megalopolis is slated for a September 27 release in theatres. The film will release for one night, for an ultimate IMAX experience, on September 23.
