David Fincher to direct English adaptation of Squid Game for Netflix

Ahead of the season 2 premiere of critically acclaimed Korean series Squid Game, an English adaptation of the same is in works at Netflix with noted filmmaker David Fincher in talks to direct.

Known for helming blockbuster hits like Seven, Gone Girl, Fight Club and The Social Network, the director has previously worked with Netflix on projects like Mindhunter series and The Killer.

Other details regarding the cast members, plot and a tentative release date have not been revealed. Dennis Kelly, best known for scripting the thriller show Utopia which ran from 2013 till 2014, is expected to serve as the screenwriter for the series.

This is the first scripted spin-off of the original Squid Game series. Earlier, Netflix had made an unscripted reality competition series titled Squid Game: The Challenge in 2022. It has been renewed for a second season. A video game franchise has also been launched.

Written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game was released in 2021 and starred Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Wi Ha-joon, HoYeon Jung, O Yeong-su, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung in lead roles. The second season of Squid Game will premiere on Netflix on December 26, with a third and final season already in the works.
