Actor Sam Crane and filmmaker Pinny Grylls made a documentary, described as a blend of the game GTA (Grand Theft Auto) and William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. It premiered at the 2024 South by Southwest conglomeration and won its jury award for best documentary. The latest development about the documentary is that Mubi has acquired the rights to distribute it not just in the US but also globally. It will release internationally as a subscription video on demand (SVOD) offering.

The documentary follows a couple of unemployed actors in the 2021 pandemic period as they try to stage Shakespeare's play in the virtual world of GTA.

Mubi plans on releasing Grand Theft Hamlet early next year; further information is expected to come out soon from the streaming service provider.

BFI Doc Society, Park Pictures, Altitude and Spark Features financed the documentary.

Altitude Film Sales, which negotiated the agreement with Mubi, handles international sales on Grand Theft Hamlet.
