After a competitive bidding battle, Sony Pictures has secured the rights to Grandgear, a project helmed by Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki. The film has officially been greenlit with Yamazaki set to write, direct, and produce, marking his debut English-language feature. J J Abrams of Bad Robot and Glen Zipper are also on board as producers. The storyline remains under wraps for now.

Following the tremendous success of Godzilla Minus One, which solidified Yamazaki’s critical and commercial reputation, Hollywood was eager to collaborate with him. Once news broke that he was gearing up for his first English-language project, studios rushed to bid. Ultimately, Sony emerged victorious, outpacing several competitors.

Grandgear marks Yamazaki’s long-awaited foray into the Hollywood market, where he is poised to make an impact as one of the industry's most innovative filmmakers.

Known for his mastery of large-scale visual effects, Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One became a standout hit in 2023, both critically and at the box office. The film not only became the highest-grossing installment in the Godzilla franchise but also won the 2024 Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Currently, Yamazaki is in pre-production for its much-anticipated sequel.
